Los Angeles Lakers
In all reality, Ben Simmons may not help the Los Angeles Lakers in the present. As a non-shooting lead ball-handler, he’d run into many of the same fit problems that plagued the working relationship between Russell Westbrook and LeBron James.
On the other hand, this trade gives them something they don’t currently have: a clear view of the future.
Other moves would be required to make this happen. It may involve Westbrook. The Nets are unlikely to be interested in him, but maybe a three-team deal that reroutes him elsewhere could be in the cards. Leaving practicality aside, it would be an interesting move for the Lakers.
Simmons may share Westbrook’s qualities as a ball-handler who doesn’t shoot, but there are fundamental differences between them as well. Specifically, Simmons has a much higher basketball IQ. He may be able to figure out a way to function alongside James without spacing the floor for him.
