New York Knicks Receive: G Russell Westbrook, 2027 First-Round Pick (LAL)

Some fans have been fantasizing about Russell Westbrook playing for the New York Knicks for years. This probably isn’t exactly what they had in mind.

After all, the Knicks aren’t landing Westbrook here because they want him. They’re landing him because the Lakers don’t. The Knicks would be merely willing to take on his expiring contract for a season. It allows them to clear their books for the 2023-24 season.

If they win with Westbrook, it’s a bonus. They may keep him on after the season at a fraction of his previous cost. More likely, this deal has the Knicks taking a gap year.

As for the Lakers, this deal lands them three quality veterans who should be better fits alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

If they get lucky with the health of their two superstars, this deal strengthens their supporting cast enough to give their fanbase hope for more title contention.

It’s unlikely that it will do the same for the Knick. However, it could set them up for success down the road.
