Why The Los Angeles Lakers Make The Deal
The Los Angeles Lakers make this deal because they’re fully entrenched in win-now mode. With LeBron James still playing at a prime level and approaching 38, this organization can’t afford to cling to draft picks.
This trade makes them immediately better. The fit between Porzingis and Anthony Davis is particularly interesting. The Lakers would be fielding a twin towers lineup where each player can (in theory) shoot from 3 point range. Meanwhile, Porzingis’s efficacy as a drop coverage rim protector would allow Davis to operate as a free safety on defense.
That seems to be his preference. His desire to stay at the 4 spot is well-documented. Pairing him with Porzingis gives the Lakers a huge, versatile frontcourt that can overpower plenty of teams across the league.
Caldwell-Pope is no mere throw-in. Granted, his contract is needed to match salaries here. Still, he’s got preexisting chemistry with LeBron James. More generally, he’s precisely the type of 3-and-D wing that thrives alongside the all-time great playmaker.

For the Wizards, this deal is about the future. For the Lakers, it’s about the present. Still, both teams share one common goal: an eventual shot at the NBA championship.
