Why It Makes Sense For The New York Knicks
This deal is easy to justify from the New York Knicks’ perspective. They’re getting the best player in the exchange: that’s always an easy decision to justify.
With Sexton entering restricted free agency, this deal would have to come by way of sign-and-trade. It’s hard to say exactly what price tag the Knicks would slap on Sexton. If their intention is to upgrade immediately, they should make it a hefty one.
A duo of Randle and Sexton gives the Knicks a potent, diversified offensive attack. The Knicks would presumably look to surround them with 3-and-D players to compliment them as primary ball-handlers. Acquiring Cedi Osman gives them a nice head start on that front.
Sexton’s limitations as a playmaker are offset by Julius Randle’s proficiency in that area. He averaged 5.1 assists per game last year, and 6.0 over the course of his Most Improved season. That level of playmaking in the frontcourt allows a team the luxury of starting a scorer at the point guard position.
