Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: G Alec Burks, F Evan Fournier, C Nerlens Noel, 2023 First-Round Pick (DAL)
New York Knicks receive: G Collin Sexton (Sign & Trade), F Cedi Osman, F Dylan Windler
If the Knicks were able to acquire a dynamic scoring guard like Collin Sexton, they could find themselves in a similar position as the one they were in 2020-21.
It wasn’t long ago that Sexton had a case as the most important player in the Cavaliers’ future. With that said, it feels like it was several eras of NBA basketball back.
It wasn’t. In 2020-21, Sexton averaged 24.3 points per game on a 52.3 True Shooting % (TS%). He’s a dynamic scorer, capable of creating threes off the dribble or penetrating to the lane for easy layups. He’s not necessarily known for his playmaking, as he averaged 4.4 assists with 2.8 turnovers per game during the same season.
Still, in an increasingly positionless league, many teams are opting to put a pure scorer at the point guard position.

The Cavaliers are not one of those teams. With Sexton missing most of 2021-22 due to injury, Darius Garland authored a breakout season. The Cavaliers made the play-in tournament. Suddenly, this team has one of the brightest futures in the NBA.
Collin Sexton does not appear to be a part of it. If that’s true, this deal makes good sense for both sides.
