Heading into 2021-22, nobody would have predicted that Jalen Brunson would be a key free agent by the end of the season. His Most Improved Player candidacy on the season changed that.

The Mavericks should make overtures to the floor general. He’s provided them with ample secondary ball-handling behind franchise player Luka Doncic. As an integral part of their success this season, they should be working overtime to retain him.

Shouldn’t they?

For what it’s worth, this Mavericks roster is getting expensive. Tim Hardaway Jr., Davis Bertans, and Spencer Dinwiddie are all arguably on Albatros contracts. Luka Doncic’s max extension is about to kick in. If any team is desperate enough for a point guard, they may price the Mavericks out of the equation.
