Boston Celtics
If the question is whether or not the Boston Celtics need a point guard, the answer depends on how you view Marcus Smart. In the absence of a conventional floor general, he’s done an admirable job of increasing his playmaking responsibilities.
During 2021-22, he averaged a career-high 5.9 assists with only 2.2 turnovers per game. He’s hitting all the traditional marks of a point guard. Why would the Celtics replace him?
For starters, Smart is a combo guard. The Celtics could slot him back at the 2 and not regret having two playmakers in the backcourt. Conley is malleable as well. He’s shooting 40.8% from three-point range this season. He provides value off-ball when Smart or one of the dynamic duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are running the offense.
He’s also a low-usage, game-managing floor general. He’s the type of player every contender can use. However happy the Celtics may be with Smart’s play this season, they’re no exception to that rule.
