Los Angeles Lakers Receive: F Doug McDermott, G Josh Richardson, G Lonnie Walker IV, 2022 First-Round Pick (TOR), 2023 First-Round Pick (SAS), 2025 First-Round Pick (SAS)
San Antonio Spurs Receive: F/C Anthony Davis
Lakers fans may be puzzled by this exchange. Why, with LeBron James on the roster, would they accept what looks to be a rebuilding package?
What if we said that this trade could work towards making them better in 2022-23?
It indeed surrounds them with players that maximize LeBron James and Russell Westbrook. McDermott is one of the league’s most reliable three-point shooters, and both Richardson and Walker IV bring a 3-and-D skillset the team lacks.
If they could acquire a stretch big man in a different transaction, they may be able to keep Westbrook after all.

In the meantime, if the sheer talent downgrade involved here decreases their win total, it still increases their flexibility. The Lakers are stocking up on significant draft capital in this deal, and they’re receiving three contracts that are shorter than Davis’.
It might even be too much for the Spurs to give up. If so, there might be another way for them to land Davis.
