This deal breaks one of the NBA’s golden rules: never accept a rebuilding package with LeBron James on your roster. Still, if any James-led team has ever needed to be rebuilt, it’s these Lakers.
This deal doesn’t improve their win-now outlook. Hayward is still a fine player, but he’s not capable of making the same impact as Anthony Davis.
It does, however, restock their draft capital and improve their financial flexibility.
Hayward has one less year on his deal than Davis. He’ll be easy to flip as an expiring contract. It’s unlikely that he’d be part of the Lakers’ bigger vision. They make this deal to package his contract with as many first-round picks as it takes for the next available superstar.

As for the Hornets, they’re taking a massive risk here. To surrender this much draft capital, they’d have to feel confident that a core of LaMelo Ball, Anthony Davis, and Miles Bridges will be ready to contend for a title sooner rather than later.
Here’s the rub: it just might be.
