Los Angeles Lakers Receive: F Gordon Hayward, C Mason Plumlee, 2024 First-Round Pick (CHA), 2026 First-Round Pick (CHA), 2028 First-Round Pick (CHA)
Charlotte Hornets Receive: C/F Anthony Davis

This deal breaks one of the NBA’s golden rules: never accept a rebuilding package with LeBron James on your roster. Still, if any James-led team has ever needed to be rebuilt, it’s these Lakers.

This deal doesn’t improve their win-now outlook. Hayward is still a fine player, but he’s not capable of making the same impact as Anthony Davis.

It does, however, restock their draft capital and improve their financial flexibility.

Hayward has one less year on his deal than Davis. He’ll be easy to flip as an expiring contract. It’s unlikely that he’d be part of the Lakers’ bigger vision. They make this deal to package his contract with as many first-round picks as it takes for the next available superstar.
