Would this trade make sense for the New York Knicks?
It has been a struggle for the New York Knicks to find an answer at the point guard position. Well, lots of things have been a struggle for them, and for Russell Westbrook for that matter, thoughout the 2021-22 season.
There is a clear need for Westbrook to find a fresh start elsewhere given he is not going to be a fit next to LeBron James. Unless the Los Angeles Lakers look to trade James, moving on from Westbrook is essential. Could this present an opportunity for the Knicks?
A lot of this move for the Knicks would be about taking on an expiring deal that helps to clear out the long-term commitments to players like Evan Fournier and Nerlens Noel—opening up a massive amount of salary cap space in the future to recruit help for RJ Barrett.
Receiving a 2027 first-round pick would be an intriguing option for the Knicks to add yet another asset to use in the future as they build around Barrett.
