Does this trade make sense for the New Orleans Pelicans?
New Orleans could easily look to add talent at the trade deadline instead of “selling it away,” but what are they realistically going to get at this point?
Tomas Satoransky and Jaxson Hayes are the two players they would like to trade the most, but both players hold little value league-wide on the trade block and the New Orleans Pelicans really do not have any other trade assets unless they are willing to give up Hart and/or Valanciunas.
Trading away Brandon Ingram would be a bad move given that he is only 24-years-old and turning into one of the best two-way forwards in the league, but this trade opens the door for the Pelicans to find success right away, something they have not been known for over the years.
Since the start of the 2011-12 season, the Pelicans have made the playoffs just twice and they have only advanced past the first-round of the playoffs twice in their team’s history!

Zion Williamson has not played at all this season, but this is Year 3 of him being in the league. The former No. 1 overall pick is going to be extension-eligible in the offseason and with rumors looming over this front-office’s head about Zion’s future in the league, they need to make the necessary moves to prove to their young All-Star that they can win right now.
Going out and trading for Domantas Sabonis and CJ McCollum, two other All-Star-like talents, quickly forms a new “Big 3” in the Western Conference that could absolutely be a real playoff threat, assuming they are fully-healthy.

This trade would result in the Pelicans giving up three first-round picks, two second-round picks, Josh Hart, Jonas Valanciunas and Brandon Ingram, but this team is not in a “win-now” position right now.
With McCollum and Sabonis though, the New Orleans Pelicans would prove that they are ready to be a threat in the Western Conference and they would head into the offseason with a handful of cap space to spend on quality secondary talents.
