Darius Garland Gets Backcourt Help in Cleveland From Dennis Schroder

Losing Collin Sexton and Ricky Rubio to season-ending knee injuries has really hurt the Cavaliers’ backcourt depth, as well as their scoring depth, but Cleveland has not missed a step this season!

Currently sitting as the 3-seed in the Eastern Conference at 30-19 on the year, the Cleveland Cavaliers have proven that they can contend against the best-of-the-best and they made a statement on Wednesday night by beating the Milwaukee Bucks by 16 points.

However, Cavaliers’ GM Koby Altman and the entire Cavs’ front-office are still searching for ways to add more talent to their roster ahead of the trade deadline. The addition of Rajon Rondo has proven useful in the backcourt given all of his experiences as a past All-Star and NBA champion, but Cleveland could still benefit from adding another backcourt talent to take pressure off of Darius Garland to do everything for this team.

With Rubio out for the year, his $17.8M contract is definitely one that could be moved to bring in another playmaker or scorer. Dennis Schroder is a name that has come up a lot in connection to the Cavaliers this season and being on a small, one-year contract, he is the perfect complimentary guard to pair with Garland.

Through 35 games, Dennis Schroder has averaged 15.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists and has shot 44.1% from the floor, making him a really solid trade target for the Cavaliers.

Pacers’ Caris LeVert is still a possibility as a scorer on the wing given the interest some in the Cavaliers’ front-office have in him, but pursuing a low-cost option like Dennis Schroder certainly makes sense given their biggest needs as an organization.

Dennis Schroder can score, he can facilitate and most importantly, he can take a lot of pressure off of Garland to have to do everything for this backcourt.

On the season, Darius Garland is making a career-best 2.5 three-pointers per game, so getting him more involved off-the-ball could be useful for a Cavaliers team that plays three 7-footers in their starting rotation with Markkanen, Mobley and Allen.

Cleveland may not be a true championship threat in the Eastern Conference yet, but they are a young team on the rise. They are only going to get better as the season goes on and making the playoffs with another key veteran in Dennis Schroder certainly sets them far ahead in their rebuild process, as well as allows Schroder to chase a big contract in the offseason.
