Marvin Bagley III Bolsters Boston’s Frontcourt

The Boston Celtics are just 25-24 on the season and they have really struggled to find consistency on their roster outside of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, their two young All-Stars on the wing.

Al Horford and Robert Williams have done a good job locking things down in the frontcourt, but Boston just needs more depth anywhere they can get it at this point. Adding another big man like Marvin Bagley III not only makes them a better rebounding team than they already are, but he can be another low-post scoring option for them, opening up more space for Tatum and Brown to play one-on-one from the perimeter.

After trying to trade Bagley at the trade deadline last season and then trying to do so again in the offseason, the Sacramento Kings were unable to find a deal they liked for the former No. 2 overall pick, creating an awkward situation on their roster right now.

According to Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee, the Kings are interested in packaging Buddy Hield with Marvin Bagley III in a trade, but the team is also open to any deals that come their way for the former No. 2 overall pick.

Things with Bagley just have not worked out in Sacramento given his list of injuries and the fact that the team gave up on him near the end of last season.

The Celtics have a $17M TPE that they could utilize to absorb Marvin Bagley’s contract this season and they would not have to worry about paying him long-term since he is in the final year of his contract.

On their bench right now, Boston has Grant Williams, Aaron Nesmith, Romeo Langford and Enes Freedom. None of those players really offer much in terms of immediate production, but Marvin Bagley III could be an immediate source of production on both ends of the floor in the frontcourt for them.

Playing Bagley with Williams at the same time allows the Celtics to have more size on the floor, as well as allowing Tatum and Brown to have more options in terms of moving around on the perimeter.

Using Marvin Bagley as a “Sixth-Man” type of player would be highly advantageous to the Celtics and to Bagley too. Being in the final year of his contract, the young forward is going to be playing to earn himself a big deal next offseason, which is why he could be willing to take a lesser role than first imagined in Boston.
