Would this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?
For the Boston Celtics, this trade is all about getting a proven point guard to run the offense. As mentioned, Marcus Smart has done a fine job in that role this year, but Mike Conley is an All-Star who fits the team a bit better.
Boston would be trying the Chris Paul experiment in this trade, but obviously at a lower level. The Phoenix Suns added a talented, proven, veteran point guard to their young team, and it turned them into a championship-level squad.
Conley is obviously not the same player as Paul, but the idea is the same. Add a veteran lead to help lead a team of younger, super-talented players, and the results should be great. Sure, Conley is on the older side, but he would help the C’s immensely for the next few years.
Plus, Conley is a much better shooter than Smart. His 42.4 percent from deep is over 12 percent better than Smart. That sort of shooting at the point guard position could definitely help transform Boston’s offense as well. He gives them both shooting and playmaking.

With Mike Conley being 34 years old, this is obviously a risk. Boston would have to believe that they can win a title in the next few years, and if they don’t, then this trade doesn’t make sense. But Paul and the Suns provided the blueprint. This would be the Celtics following it.
