San Antonio Spurs Receive: F Kristaps Porzingis, C Moses Brown, G Josh Green

This trade between the Mavericks and Spurs would surely shake things up in the Western Conference, especially since the Mavs would be adding some much-needed depth to their roster.

As mentioned before, Dallas is a really strong defensive team, but their offense has held them back and they rank just 15th in the league in bench points per game.

Reggie Bullock has not been the key scoring addition on the wing that the Mavericks had hoped for and outside of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jalen Brunson off-the-bench, Dallas really has nobody else to turn to for scoring.

The addition of Derrick White and Lonnie Walker IV on the perimeter gives the Mavericks some more reliable scorers and Thaddeus Young can reinforce this frontcourt with the departure of Kristaps Porzingis.

Now in his 15th NBA season, it is not a secret around the NBA that the Spurs are looking to move Thaddeus Young. The veteran forward has barely played with San Antonio, but he did have a really solid year with the Bulls last season.

In 68 games with Chicago during the 2020-21 season, Young averaged 12.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and shot 55.9% from the floor. Being a power-forward and sometimes a center in smaller rotations, Thaddeus Young could be exactly the kind of veteran presence this Mavericks team needs in their frontcourt right now.

San Antonio lost DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay and Patty Mills this past offseason. All three players were relied upon heavily and now without them, the Spurs have entered into a new era where Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson are the offensive leaders of this team.

Derrick White is also a key, important piece to the puzzle for the Spurs, but he is expendable and his four-year, $68M contract could be a contract San Antonio looks to move on from at some point.

As of right now, the Spurs have not held trade discussions with teams surrounding Derrick White. This does not mean though that White will not be moved at the deadline should they be able to get a ton of value for him.

Kristaps Porzingis could wind up being a key No. 2 option next to Dejounte Murray long-term for the Spurs and San Antonio has always been able to get the most out of skilled big men. With the right coaches in San Antonio, Porzingis could finally become the low-post scoring threat he was destined to be in this league.
