Would this trade make sense for the Atlanta Hawks?
The Atlanta Hawks were in the Eastern Conference Finals last year. They have reason to believe that, with the right pieces around Trae Young, they can replicate that success. Well, since the current team clearly isn’t up to par, moving things around could be helpful.
This trade would give the Hawks a proven second-option in CJ McCollum. Sure, the backcourt duo of Young and McCollum would struggle on the defensive side of the ball, but that’s why the Hawks would surround them with other defensive-minded pieces.
Robert Covington falls under that category. He may not be having the best shooting year, but his defense will always be there. Inserting Covington at the power forward position (with Clint Capela at the center) would be a great combination next to Young.
Plus, the Hawks would be able to get off of Danilo Gallinari and John Collins’ contract. They would add McCollum’s hefty salary, but it would still be an improvement overall, considering Covington is a free agent at the end of the year.

It’s not the perfect trade, but since Collins wants out anyway, why not try to be back another All-Star-caliber player? If there are trades out there for guys like Ben Simmons or other All-NBA-level defenders, they should do that. But if not, then this deal would be decent.
