Spurs Have Intriguing Trade Chip That Contenders Want

San Antonio Spurs, NBA Trade Rumors
NBA Analysis Network

The San Antonio Spurs find themselves in the dreaded no man’s land of the NBA. They are not in a position to seriously challenge for a title, but they aren’t bad enough to have a good chance of landing near the top of the NBA Draft.

Because of that, they were a team that many people are keeping an eye on in the trade market. San Antonio could be buyers, as they have been linked to Ben Simmons and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Dejounte Murray is San Antonio’s best trade chip. He would be included in any deal for Simmons should traction be gained. If the team goes into a full teardown, he would likely bring back the best trade package. Not only has Murray made major strides with his production, but his contract makes him a bargain as well.

They could also be sellers, as there are some veterans on the team that contending teams would have an interest in acquiring. If the Spurs were going to trade anyone, Thaddeus Young is whom many assumed would be on the way out.

When the San Antonio Spurs are at full strength, Young has played sporadically. He has produced when called upon, but admitted that being a part-time player in that fashion is not a role for him.

He is a player that plenty of contending teams would love to add to their teams. Young is a steady scorer, averaging double-digit points per game for 14 straight seasons coming into this one. That streak is in jeopardy of being snapped, but it would be an easier pill to swallow should he be doing it on a team contending for a title.

While Young has garnered the most attention, he isn’t the only veteran that is drawing some attention as a trade target. According to The Athletic, sharpshooting guard Bryn Forbes is also expected to be someone that contending teams are interested in.

Forbes is having another great season shooting the ball, knocking down 42.5 percent of his 3-point attempts. The rotational role as a shooter off the bench is one that Forbes thrives in, as he did it for the Milwaukee Bucks last season en route to an NBA title.

For his career, the Michigan State product has knocked down 41.3 percent of his 3-point attempts. Teams can never have too much 3-point shooting and Forbes could be one of the better shooters available at the deadline.
