Does this trade make sense for the Atlanta Hawks?
Bringing back Dennis Schroder is a move that makes sense, especially since the Atlanta Hawks would not only get another secondary facilitator/scorer next to Trae Young in their backcourt, but since they would get what they ultimately wanted for Cam Reddish – a first-round pick.
While it is Top-8 protected in 2023, Boston has made the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons and will likely make it eight this year.
Atlanta would basically be guaranteeing themselves a late first-round pick anywhere from 20-30 in the 2023 NBA Draft, which should be enough value for them to relinquish Reddish.
The young wing has played well for the Hawks since being drafted 10th overall in 2019 but they just cannot afford to keep him at this point.

Atlanta is already set to pay over $150M in payroll next season, which is why they will not be able to offer a long-term extension to both Cam Reddish and De’Andre Hunter.
Given that Hunter is the more developed wing at this time and makes a bigger difference on both ends of the court for this team when healthy, the Hawks will likely choose to keep him over Reddish, which is why trading Cam Reddish now while his value is still high makes the most sense.
Being in the final year of his contract, Dennis Schroder would not be a long-term liability for this team and could thrive in a “sixth-man” type of role like he did with the Thunder during the 2019-20 season.

His down year with the Lakers last season has seemed to decrease Schroder’s overall value, but he is once again proving that he is a valuable asset with the Celtics this season. Dennis Schroder has proven that he can play off-the-ball and play next to other superstar talents in Tatum and Brown, which is why he could do the same playing off of Young in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Hawks traded away Dennis Schroder when they drafted Trae Young, but getting a chance to pair the two guards together may just work wonders for this Hawks’ offense.
