Trey Burke – Dallas Mavericks

Nobody knows what to expect from the Dallas Mavericks around the NBA trade deadline this year, but one player who has been on the trade block for them is Trey Burke. 

Not too long ago, Burke was out of the league, but Dallas called him up ahead of the NBA Bubble in 2020 and signed him as one of their “replacement players”. 

This seemed to work out for both sides, as Trey Burke really played well in the NBA Bubble, averaging 12.0 points, 3.8 assists and shooting 43.2% from three-point range in 8 games. During the 2020-21 season, Burke continued to serve as a backup guard for the Mavericks, averaging 6.6 points and shooting 35.4% from three-point range, but his role began to drop as Jalen Brunson earned more and more minutes. 

Now, there were talks ahead of this season about the Mavericks trying to trade Trey Burke, but there was little to not interest. He is going to be a player on the block ahead of the trade deadline this season, but Trey Burke is not really a player the Hawks need to pursue.

They have Trae Young as their star point guard and behind him, they not only have Lou Williams in the backcourt, but Delon Wright and Skylar Mays as well.

 Adding another guard to this team really does not do anything to help the Hawks, even if Trey Burke can play off-the-ball as a two-guard in some lineups. 

His three-point shooting numbers are definitely something that will be intriguing to the Hawks, but Burke would be nothing more than a plug-and-play guy for this team that would only get on the court at the end of games and/or if someone was to get hurt. 

Obviously he would see some playing time right now with guys like Bogdan Bogdanovic and Cam Reddish injured, but Trey Burke really is not worth giving up any assets from Atlanta’s point of view.

In order to trade for Trey Burke, the Hawks would have to give up Jalen Johnson, Solomon Hill, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot or Cam Reddish and it does not appear that they are interested in moving any of these four players right now.
