How This Trade Impacts Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks are stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to Kristaps Porzingis. They are going to find it difficult to get back the value that they paid for him, but it seems clear that he won’t live up to expectations.
Is this going to be a salary dump for Dallas, or can they get something of value back?
In this deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder, they come away about as well as they can expect in a deal for Porzingis.
Derrick Favors gives them another center option in the middle. He could be flipped again later on, as Dallas does have Dwight Powell, Willie Cauley-Stein, and Boban Marjanovic to deploy at the center position already. His inclusion is mostly to help match salary.

Luguentz Dort provides Dallas with another defensive-minded player on the wing, which they can never have enough of. He can knock down some 3-pointers as well, providing Jason Kidd with another option for the small-ball lineups he has been using thus far.
Kenrich Williams is a do-it-all forward with some versatility. He can defend multiple positions and fill numerous roles in an offense. Williams is a solid shooter, can do a little playmaking, and is a good rebounder. He could step into a sizable role in the frontcourt without Porzingis.

The first-round pick isn’t likely to be very high as it is coming from the LA Clippers. But, the Mavericks don’t have much draft capital and it gives them another asset to use as a trade chip or add affordable young talent to the roster.
