How This Trade Impacts Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic started their teardown at the NBA trade deadline in March. They traded away Nikola Vucevic, Aaron Gordon, and Evan Fournier to signal that their rebuild was underway.

Surprisingly, Terrence Ross remained on the roster following that. Ross wasn’t traded during the offseason either, making him a prime in-season trade target for teams. At 30-years old, the rebuilding Magic don’t have much use for a scoring sixth man, but they can cash in and get some solid pieces back for him.

In this hypothetical deal, they land Dwight Powell, Josh Green, and a 2025 first-round pick that is top-10 protected. In a deal for Ross, that is a solid return package for Orlando.

Powell is an efficient combo big man that can provide the team with minutes at either frontcourt spot. His inclusion in this deal is likely what would help the Magic land the future first-round pick. For a team in their position, it is a fair trade-off.

Green was the No. 18 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He didn’t receive much playing time as a rookie and it looks like it will be more of the same this season as well. Getting him back in a rebuilding effort is good value for Orlando, as they can likely find him minutes on the wing that Dallas couldn’t.

Overall, this is a solid package for the Magic. They get back a contract they likely don’t want, but the first-round pick and Green make it a worthwhile deal.
