Would this trade make sense for the New Orleans Pelicans?

The New Orleans Pelicans would continue to reshape its roster to win in the future with an NBA trade scenario that features Brandon Ingram to a new destination. Landing an unprotected first-round pick from the San Antonio Spurs could net quite an intriguing prospect in the 2022 NBA Draft.

In this particular trade scenario involving the Spurs, Ingram and his contract would be sent away, which is the biggest intrigue here — clearing cap space to help the front office to surround Zion Williamson with talent.

As previously mentioned, New Orleans would get the Spurs’ first-round pick from this year’s draft in Josh Primo. It was a bit of a surprise when they took him as high as they did but he has great potential entering the NBA.

Doug McDermott is a capable three-point shooter and journeyman. Plenty of justifications can be made about this deal but anyway you look at it, it is clearly a move to clear cap space for New Orleans.

The Pelicans are not an intriguing destination for top talent just yet. That could change if they push some buttons and put some help around Zion Williamson going forward, who enters the 2021-22 season sidelined as he recovers from injury. Being patient with Williamson’s recovery while retooling could be a long-term victory.
