Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?
Getting Dennis Schroder at a massive discount was one of the best deals of the offseason for the Boston Celtics and they are actually going to need him to be successful this year. With Kemba Walker now gone, Marcus Smart is going to play a big role at the point guard position, along with second-year scorer Payton Pritchard, but this team needs a “change-of-pace” guard like Schroder in their rotations.
He may not be the best point guard in the league, but Dennis Schroder has been a Sixth-Man of the Year candidate before and he should have no problem assuming this role once again but in Boston this time. Two seasons ago with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Schroder came into games behind Chris Paul and had one of his best statistical seasons ever scoring the basketball.
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are obviously the two center-points of this Celtics’ organization, but Dennis Schroder’s value is definitely a lot more than many would imagine. While he can be turnover-prone at times, the 28-year-old point guard has an above-average first step, allowing him to attack the lane against less athletic defenders.
What this does for a team like the Celtics is definitely overlooked because it takes needed pressure off Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to have to do everything for this team and opposing teams will have to sink into the paint if Schroder gets past their primary defender on the perimeter.

Seeing as he is more than able to find open teammates and average upwards of 5-plus assists per game, Dennis Schroder can then kick the ball out to someone who is wide-open on the perimeter for Boston or better yet, lob the ball up to Robert Williams underneath for an easy two points.
Adding Nicolas Batum gives Boston another three-point shooting threat and experienced player in their frontcourt, but this role is going to belong to Juan Hernangomez and Al Horford. If they can get Batum then great, but if not, the Celtics are definitely not at a complete loss.

Dennis Schroder actually brings more value to them in the backcourt heading into the new season than Nicolas Batum would bring in the frontcourt, hence why the Boston Celtics do not need to make this trade to be successful during the 2021-22 NBA season.
