Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?
Can Kristaps Porzingis turn things around and prove to be the No. 2 scorer the Dallas Mavericks need him to be this season? He absolutely can.
However, his contract is not favorable whatsoever for what the Mavericks need it to be right now. After extending Luka Doncic long-term this offseason, as well as bringing Tim Hardaway Jr. back on a long-term, four-year deal, the Dallas Mavericks are kind of tied down to what they have over the next several years.
This team is going to be inching dangerously close to the luxury tax threshold over the next couple of seasons, hence why trading Kristaps Porzingis definitely makes sense, regardless of what kind of value this team gets in return. In this deal with the Golden State Warriors, the Mavericks would get two guys that can help them now and in the future, hence why it makes sense.
Andrew Wiggins is coming off a year in which he averaged 18.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and shot 38% from distance as the No. 2 option on a team with Stephen Curry, the best scorer in the league. He can undoubtedly be a perfect addition on the wing next to both Doncic and Hardaway Jr. and Wiggins is only 26-years-old, meaning that he still has room to continue growing into a two-way force on the wing.

James Wiseman has the potential to be a franchise center and while he is still a young player that needs to learn, he would definitely get better with Luka Doncic as his point guard. Compared to Stephen Curry, Doncic is more of a facilitator and better pick-and-roll threat in terms of passing, which is why Wiseman could thrive in Dallas.
The Mavericks need options on how to build around Doncic for the future and right now, they do not have that with Porzingis under contract long-term. Finding a way to get out of this contract would be highly beneficial to them, even if they take a slight hit offensively this season.

Acquiring Andrew Wiggins and James Wiseman gives the Dallas Mavericks a lot more potential to win in the future than they have currently with Kristaps Porzingis, hence why this trade with Golden State makes sense for them. Dallas would be smart to try and push for this trade around midseason.
