Tyler Herro’s Struggles From Last Season
Last season, Tyler Herro averaged 15.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and shot 36% from the floor, which is pretty solid considering he was dealing with some injuries and came off-the-bench in nearly 73% of the total games he played in, but there were some signs of regression and struggle.
Herro did not look as confident in his perimeter shot as he did during his rookie season and at times, the young guard just seemed to be in a mental funk. Heavy expectations were placed on him quickly, which could have been the cause of some of these struggles, but overall, Tyler Herro seemed like he just needed a break.
“I just needed a little bit of time to detach and step away from the game to have an actual offseason,” Herro told reporters on Media Day. “When you step away from something, you usually end up missing it and loving it and that’s what I did. So I took a couple of weeks off, got back to working out and I am really satisfied with where I am at right now heading into the season.”
At 21-years-old and being thrown into the situation he was in, it is definitely clear to see where Herro’s mental fatigue could have come from, especially from playing in a secluded NBA Bubble with nobody around you to then having to play a full season with plenty of health protocols in place. “Taking some time off” in the offseason would generally mean that a young, 20-something-year-old player would go out and have fun partying, which Herro definitely did, but at the same time, he also has a ton of new responsibilities in his life.

Believe it or not, a 21-year-old can actually have a life outside of basketball and that is indeed the case for Tyler Herro, who recently welcomed a daughter into his life with his girlfriend Katya Elise.
Taking some time off from basketball to be there for his girlfriend and his newborn daughter definitely shows the maturity in Herro at such a young age, making him mentally locked in when he is on the court.
There is no question that Herro loves the game of basketball, but life is definitely bigger than basketball for every single player in the NBA.
