Why Sacramento Kings Do This Trade

The Sacramento Kings have been actively shopping Marvin Bagley III. At this point, a change of scenery would be best for both parties. Landing a package like this should be considered a win for the Kings’ front office.

While not the big move general manager Monte McNair is looking to swing, this is a solid deal. Extracting two former first-round picks in Romeo Langford and Grant Williams, in addition to a 2022 second-round pick, is a great haul.

Like Bagley, Langford has battled injuries throughout his first two seasons in the NBA. He has been unable to crack the Boston Celtics’ rotation consistently and it doesn’t look like his chances are going to improve this season.

The two best players on the team, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are both wing players. Aaron Nesmith looked to jump him on the depth chart last season and Josh Richardson was added to the mix this offseason as well, pushing him even further down.

In Sacramento, Langford will have a shot to earn minutes on the wing, a spot they are lacking in. There was a reason Langford was the fifth-ranked player in his recruiting class in 2018, but he has to get healthy.

Williams provides the Kings with a steady presence in the frontcourt. He is a strong defender and versatile, providing minutes at both forward spots and even some minutes at center depending on the matchup.

A 2022 second-round pick is a nice asset to have if the Kings want to maneuver around the draft board or add some young talent to their roster. This is as good of a package as the Kings will likely get in return for Bagley given his current value around the league.
