Why Boston Celtics Do This Trade

The Boston Celtics have a need at the power forward spot. Unless new head coach Ime Udoka plans on using Jayson Tatum at the 4 spot more often this season, they need some help there.

As the roster is currently situated, a combination of Al Horford, Grant Williams, Jabari Parker and Bruno Fernando will be handling the power forward minutes. That isn’t overly encouraging, as none of them should be playing starter minutes. But, Marvin Bagley III could help solve some of their problems.

Bagley hasn’t lived up to the expectations of being the No. 2 pick out of Duke in 2018, but he has shown flashes. He has been derailed by injuries, which has stagnated his development throughout the first three years in the NBA.

Offensively, there is a lot of promise. He has made strides with his jump shot, making 34.3 percent on his 3-pointers last season and showing the potential to become a stretch-four. He has averaged 14.1 points per game in his career and could offer some scoring punch behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Defensively, Bagley leaves a lot to be desired. However, playing alongside a strong defensive player such as Robert Wiliams III could help overcome his deficiencies. Horford would also be a good mentor for Bagley to learn from.

Taking a shot on a Marvin Bagley III and hoping a change of scenery and culture can bring the best out of him is a worthwhile bet for the Celtics to make.
