Yes, Deandre Ayton was taken ahead of Luka Doncic in the 2018 NBA Draft. While Luka Doncic is on his way to being a historic player, Ayton has held his own as the No. 1 overall pick.

Even though Deandre Ayton saw his points per game decline last season, he was way more efficient and he was more engaged on the defensive end.

Throughout the playoffs in 2020-2021, you could tell that Ayton has drastically improved since his rookie season in the NBA. Playing alongside Chris Paul and Devin Booker has helped him to flourish, it will be interesting to see how he build on it.
