How This Trade Impacts Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks will need to plan ahead when it comes to paying out the players that are set to earn contract extensions. Trae Young could qualify for a supermax appearance with an All-NBA nod and if that does indeed happen, he will account for 35-percent of the salary cap.
John Collins landed a substantial contract extension this offseason and will earn $23 million in 2021-22. When factoring in how Bogdan Bogdanovic and Clint Capela will combine for roughly $35.1 million this season and $36.2 million next season, that’s a lot of spending.
The Hawks appear primed to need to move on from Danilo Gallinari at some point when considering he’s 33-years-old and is not a long-term answer on the perimeter. De’Andre Hunter is the most impactful of the team’s small forward options.
If the Hawks keep both Hunter and Cam Reddish throughout the remainder of their contracts, both players will need new contracts at the same time. It’s certainly possible to keep both players, but is it worth it to do so?

The idea behind trading for Aaron Nesmith is that he can provide sharpshooting on the wing without needing as large of a second contract as Reddish. All the while Atlanta would add a first-round pick in the process.
