San Antonio Spurs fall to “rock bottom” to begin the year

Maybe the San Antonio Spurs end up with Ben Simmons before the start of the 2021-22 season, but overall, this does not change the fact that they have one of the toughest schedules to begin the year.

The combined win percentage of the teams they will play over the first month of the season adds up to about 53.4%, which does not seem too over-the-top, but they will be playing the likes of the Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, LA Clippers, and Phoenix Suns, sometimes twice, during this first month.

Those are all games that the Spurs will not be favored in and then they will have to play teams like the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, and Minnesota Timberwolves, who all should be better than they were last season.

With the departures of DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, and Patty Mills this offseason, it seems like the Spurs have reached the end of an era.

From 1997-2019, you never saw the Spurs miss the playoffs and in this span of decades, they won five titles. San Antonio is one of the best organizations in the entire NBA when it comes to sustained success, but all good things must come to an end and the San Antonio Spurs’ reign of terror is over, at least for now.

Overall though, the Spurs do have some really solid building blocks already on their roster in Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, and Lonnie Walker IV. Spending time developing these guys further, as well as other young talents in Devin Vassell, Jakob Poeltl, and rookie Joshua Primo will be the main goal of this franchise this upcoming year.

Winning is something that will happen sporadically for the San Antonio Spurs during the 2021-22 season, but their main focus will be figuring out the future of their roster.

The San Antonio Spurs will miss the playoffs for a third consecutive season for the first time ever, but they could learn a lot about the potential success on the horizon through their young talents this year.
