Does this trade make sense for the Memphis Grizzlies?
The Memphis Grizzlies definitely have the capability to pull off a trade for Ben Simmons should they want to, but why would they want to? Simmons is a primary ball-handler and facilitator, so Ja Morant’s role would be diminished on this team and he really does not fit into what they have been building over the years.
Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr., and De’Anthony Melton are three key guys in the Grizzlies’ system and by taking them away, Memphis would actually be setting themselves back.
Going 38-34 last season may seem very mediocre and average for any team in this league, but last season was a huge success for the Grizzlies.
They not only proved they were way ahead of schedule in their rebuilding process, but they even won Game 1 of their first-round series against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City. The Jazz was the best home team in the league last season, so this was definitely a big accomplishment, even if they ultimately lost the series!

This team has proven that they can compete in the Western Conference and seeing as their average age right now is 23.35-years-old, the sky’s the limit for what they can achieve.
Over the next several seasons, the Grizzlies are only going to get better, which is why dumping a large chunk of their young core for Ben Simmons doesn’t necessarily make the most sense.
Simmons is a top talent in this league and one of the best all-around defenders, but his fit does not really match what the Grizzlies should be looking for.
In terms of value, yes this trade makes sense, as moving Jaren Jackson Jr., Brooks, and Melton for Simmons is fair for Memphis, but this is just not a trade that works in their favor in the grand scheme of things.
