There has been a lot of discussion about what the Dallas Mavericks haven’t done this offseason. They tried to find a secondary ball-handler to play alongside Luka Doncic, but they haven’t been able to do so yet.

So, the Mavericks pivoted and upgraded the 3-point shooting around him. Acquiring Buddy Hield, in addition to the signings of Reggie Bullock and Sterling Brown, would further do that.

Hield would be the third player the Mavericks acquired this offseason that would be considered an elite shooter. He has made 40.6 percent of his attempts in his career and does it on high volume, making 3.0 out of 7.4 attempts per game.

He has the size to be a solid defender, but things have not clicked yet on that end of the court in Sacramento. That could be a product of his surroundings, as the Kings were one of the worst defensive teams in the history of the NBA last season. Could that change with the Mavericks?

While mostly regarded for his shooting, Hield did show last season he can handle some ball-handling and playmaking responsibility. Without De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton down the stretch, it was Hield who was initiating the offense. He averaged a career-high 3.6 assists per game, as that is an area he has steadily improved in throughout his career.
