Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?

Getting Ben Simmons could very well end up being a key move for the San Antonio Spurs franchise that could set them up for a lot of success moving forward, but it could also set them back even further in their rebuild process. Is this really a chance the Spurs are willing to take right now seeing as they have a really strong foundation in place?

Derrick White and Dejounte Murray have both been in the league for at least four seasons now and each guy has continued to improve both on and off-the-ball on both ends of the floor, so trading them could really screw things up for San Antonio. They did just draft 18-year-old Joshua Primo and they are high on Lonnie Walker IV as well, but I am not too sure this move really makes the Spurs “better” moving forward.

Talking about Ben Simmons is a very touchy subject because you really do not know which player you are talking about. There is the defensive menace who is an All-NBA performer, but there is also the guy who is 7-feet tall and tends to shy away from attacking the basket to score when guarded by 6’1” Trae Young.

Some days he is great on both ends of the court, but other days, you are asking yourself how this guy is an All-Star, so trading for Ben Simmons really is like rolling the dice at a craps table.

There is no denying the fact that the potential is there for Simmons to magically put everything together one day and become the best two-way player in the league, but the chance of him continuing to disappoint seems more likely, which is why the Spurs would probably be better off holding onto what they have right now.

Targeting a guy like Ben Simmons in a trade could be advantageous, but it could also cost the Spurs two really great backcourt pieces that could help them become playoff threats once again. The Spurs have a solid foundation in place already and are going to continue to develop the other young talents around Murray and White, which is why they should not look to make this trade with the 76ers.
