Does this trade make sense for the Sacramento Kings?
In the trade scenario revolving around Buddy Hield going to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Sacramento Kings were most likely getting Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell and the No. 22 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft in return. Kuzma is a young, versatile forward and Harrell is a former Sixth-Man of the Year center, so both guys could have contributed to the Kings plans moving forward.
Where exactly does Kelly Oubre Jr. fit into the picture for them, especially on a multi-year, $20M+ contract? Well, he is a guy who can contribute immediately, play various positions, and is athletic enough to be a factor with a young, athletic core like Fox, Haliburton and rookie Davion Mitchell. Meanwhile, Buddy Hield doesn’t cleanly fit into the mix and that’s why he’s found himself in NBA trade rumors.
Flipping Buddy Hield for Kelly Oubre Jr. has its advantages for the Kings because they basically move a player that does not want to be there for a guy who wants to make a difference for a team. It is clear to see that Hield is frustrated in his situation with the Kings and they have been shopping him for a while now, so they obviously want to move on from him.
Getting Oubre Jr. would be a really solid addition for the Kings on the wing, plus they would most definitely end up getting the Warriors first-round pick in next year’s draft, allowing them to continue building on a young, sustainable core moving forward.

Financial restrictions may cause a trade like this not to happen, especially on the Warriors end of the things, but moving Buddy Hield for Kelly Oubre Jr. and a first-round pick is definitely a solid move for the Kings, even if they would be tied down to Oubre Jr. long-term and hard cap themselves in the process.
