Does this trade work for the Philadelphia 76ers?
Getting a player of CJ McCollum’s stature would certainly help the Philadelphia 76ers’ problem of not having enough scoring in the postseason. Landing him without surrendering Ben Simmons in the deal would be a massive win as it would give the team some maneuverability.
The 76ers would be able to shift Simmons to the frontcourt full-time in this scenario. That is something they should try to do before trading him out of town for pennies on the dollar. Moving Simmons into the frontcourt would open things up for the 76ers offensively, as he would no longer be meandering out on the perimeter uninvolved in the plays.
McCollum isn’t a true point guard but is capable of being a lead playmaker. Simmons could still initiate offense as a point-forward, it would just come from a different area of the court.
McCollum would assume the 1B scoring role alongside Joel Embiid that Harris is departing from. It is something he is very comfortable doing as he has done it for six seasons alongside Damian Lillard.

In this scenario, if things don’t work out as planned by trying to move Simmons in the frontcourt, Philadelphia could still offer him up in trade talks as well. They would certainly recoup some of the draft capital that they sent out for McCollum and would undoubtedly get a player in return that can help them win now.
