Does this trade make sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves?
Karl-Anthony Towns has been the hot name on the Minnesota Timberwolves featured in trade rumors because of his position in the NBA. The team has failed to get the job done since selecting him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.
It seems likely that D’Angelo Russell is closer to the top of the list of players with potential to be traded by the Timberwolves compared to Towns. Giving up a 2021 first-round pick to land him could prove to be quite costly and currently, finding cohesive complements for Anthony Edwards and Towns appears to be best.
The Timberwolves are full of availability. Anthony Edwards might be the only player who is not going to be brought up in NBA trade rumors. There is still plenty of work to be done by the front office.
In this trade, Marcus Smart and Tristan Thompson would be short-term options in the lineup. They will bring leadership and experience to a lineup full of young players. The idea would be that Smart would provide both defense and playmaking alongside Edwards in the backcourt.
Nesmith would have a chance to progress in an extended role with a team like Minnesota. There will not be quite as much opportunity with the Celtics when considering the franchise players on the team are both wing players.

The Timberwolves need more done than just sending D’Angelo Russell away. Nonetheless, it is a start and it could spark the entire process. The approach the team has taken over the years simply hasn’t worked and this would be a change of pace.
