Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

On the surface, this trade would be a difficult one for the organization to swallow. However, when taking a deeper dive, it does make some sense.

Jalen Brunson is set to hit free agency in 2022, but because of the contract he signed as a second-round pick, he will not be a restricted free agent. So, getting something for him now instead of seeing him walk for nothing next summer makes sense.

Another thing to consider, would the Mavericks want to give Brunson a lucrative extension to be Luka Doncic’s backup? That money could be better spent elsewhere to round out the roster.

Dallas would now be able to use one of the two selections coming back to them to find a backup point guard to Doncic. They would also get a look at Kevin Knox, who took strides as a 3-point shooter this season. However, his defense leaves a lot to be desired. At this point, a clean slate is best for Knox so that he can try and realize his untapped potential.

The draft picks are really what Dallas will be happy to get back, as they will find it difficult to sign free agents in the coming seasons with a Doncic extension on the horizon, Kristaps Porzingis taking up so much of their cap space and Tim Hardaway Jr. hitting free agency this summer.
