Does this trade make sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves?

Depending on what the Minnesota Timberwolves’ front-office plans to do long-term, this is definitely a trade they could and should entertain. The idea of trading Karl-Anthony Towns has floated around this organization multiple times and now is the time that they could really capitalize on it.

If they were to trade Towns, they would probably like to give him to an Eastern Conference team so they do not have to play/see him much, but the Warriors have a ton of assets they could give the Timberwolves to not only potentially succeed now, but long-term as well.

James Wiseman is a project since he is so young, but his potential is sky-high and he could easily become an All-Star in the future. Adding Wiseman gives the T-Wolves another young player to build with next to Anthony Edwards, as do the two lottery picks they would receive from Golden State in this trade.

They would not only get their pick back that they traded last season (Pick #7), but they would also gain the Warriors 2021 1st Round Pick (Pick #14), giving them the ability to get two highly talented, young players in the draft this year.

With pick swaps then in 2022 and 2025, the Timberwolves would have the ability to potentially move up again in those drafts should Golden State finish with a worse record than Minnesota. However, the potential value Minnesota would get from Andrew Wiggins in this trade is a big unknown.

It is hard to say this trade would fully make sense for them until we know who that third team would be and what the Timberwolves could potentially get back. They do not want to take Andrew Wiggins back, which is why getting a third team involved and either gaining more draft assets or young talents would be the only thing of value to the Timberwolves.

As of right now, the simple answer is that this trade does not make sense for the Timberwolves simply because there are no answers on who would potentially take Andrew Wiggins and what they would trade to Minnesota/Golden State in the process.
