Does this trade make sense for the Golden State Warriors?

The idea of adding Karl-Anthony Towns to the Golden State Warriors sounds like something that would only work in NBA 2K, but there is an avenue that the Warriors’ front-office could explore in which they could make their dreams a reality.

Towns would be the perfect center to put next to Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, but at what cost? Golden State has voiced their opinions on both James Wiseman and Andrew Wiggins containing All-Star potential moving forward and they are very high on them, so trading both of them, as well as an abundance of draft picks away could really cripple the Warriors’ long-term success.

In the short-term, trading for KAT would be an incredible move, but the Warriors do need to consider that their future Hall-of-Fame core is not getting younger. Stephen Curry is now 33-years-old and both Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are 31. Outside of these guys, Golden State’s next best guys in terms of a “future core,” besides Wiggins and Wiseman, are Jordan Poole and Eric Paschall.

By making this trade for Towns, the Warriors would have him, Poole and Paschall to build around long-term, which does not necessarily set them up for a ton of success after their “Big 3” are ready to move on and retire.

Hopefully for the Warriors’ sake, these guys are still able to play for 5, 6, maybe even 7 years, but sooner or later, their core is going to begin to decline in terms of productivity. This “next wave” of talent in Golden State has a chance to not only be special, but help them win/contend for championships now, so trading for Towns may not necessarily be the best move to make.

Andrew Wiggins can absolutely be a force in Golden State being the #3 option with a healthy Klay Thompson on the court and as for James Wiseman, he has all the potential in the world to become that “next generation” talent at the center position that every team raves about.

Not to mention, the Warriors could potentially add two more highly talented, young players through the draft this year with the 7th and 14th overall picks. They could add young talents, but there is also the possibility that they could leverage one of these picks to add a key role playing and talent in their efforts to contend.

Karl-Anthony Towns is a fantastic talent and a very special player that would do wonders in the Warriors’ system, but right now just does not seem like the right time for the Warriors to make this trade. Keeping both Wiggins and Wiseman is a decision they definitely will not regret and with them on their roster for the 2021-22 season, there is no reason why Golden State cannot contend for another title.
