One team that is featured in NBA trade rumors to be targeting every single player this offseason are the New York Knicks because of how much cap space they have. The Knicks have just under $60M in cap space entering the offseason and with a ton of draft capital as well, they have the means to pull off a ton of different trade scenarios.

Targeting Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would be a very smart move for the Knicks not only because he is a young talent, but because they have an immediate need at the point guard position. Derrick Rose was great for New York this season and in the playoffs, but he is not the long-term solution for them at point guard.

The Knicks desperately need a young talent that they can build their backcourt around, which is why SGA makes sense. Not to mention, he has exhibited the ability to be a standout performer on the offensive-end of the court and be a threat to score from any spot on the court, which is why the Knicks need him.

Defensively, New York is as good as they can be, but they still have room to improve on offense if they are to turn themselves into legit title threats in the Eastern Conference. Julius Randle and R.J. Barrett can only do so much on offense, which is why they need to make a move for a talent like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Other guys like DeMar DeRozan, Norman Powell and maybe even Lonzo Ball could help the Knicks offensively, but none of them possess the same youth and scoring abilities as Shai Gilgeosu-Alexander does.

It is a long-shot to believe that the Thunder will make SGA available in trade talks this offseason, but this does not mean that they will not hear out offers for him. He is the future of the OKC Thunder and one of their core building blocks, but if Oklahoma City can get a good deal for him, Sam Presti may not hesitate to pull the trigger.

The Knicks own the 19th and 21st picks in this year’s draft, as well as young guys in Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin and Mitchell Robinson, so there is definitely potential for a big deal to be put together. The only question is whether or not the Knicks are willing to leverage almost all of their young assets to acquire a player like Gilgeous-Alexander when they can keep all of their guys and go after other point guard personnel in free agency.
