With Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal, the Wizards have their “one-two” punch that they need to be competitive in the Eastern Conference, but in order for them to truly be a special team, they are going to need a better supporting cast. Rui Hachimura, Deni Avdija and Daniel Gafford all seem like promising young players, but the rest of this Washington roster this year was very underwhelming. 

The Wizards do not have much cap space to operate in free agency this offseason, which means the only way for them to add more talent is to dump some salaries and pick up some talents via trades.

Adding Buddy Hield’s $20M+ per year contract is definitely not ideal for the Wizards since Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal make up about $79M in salaries, but he is definitely a player they need. 

Now, I know what you are thinking right now in terms of the Wizards already having Davis Bertans, a three-point specialist that lives out on the perimeter, but Buddy Hield can be much more efficient than Bertans can be with the Wizards. 

Other than shooting threes, Davis Bertans really does not do anything for the Wizards and he is a player that is either hot, making 5+ threes in a game, or cold, missing all 8 of his attempts. Buddy Hield is very consistent in terms of his shooting and would definitely provide some stability from beyond-the-arc in Washington.

Flipping Bertans in a Buddy Hield trade is definitely something of value for the Wizards to consider and would definitely make them a better overall team during the 2021-22 season. However, they would still have to look to add a little bit more talent to their roster because adding Buddy Hield is not enough to make the Wizards a true contender in the Eastern Conference.
