Why the trade benefits the Philadelphia 76ers
Daryl Morey came in and immediately brought in some players that fit better around the stars in Philadelphia. This includes Seth Curry and Danny Green, who give the Sixers some ability from three-point range. This is what they have lacked in year’s past next to Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.
It seems as though Ben Simmons has been in NBA trade rumors for quite some time now. His game has plateaued in Philadelphia and a change of scenery might do him some good. As for Philadelphia, they would be able to land another perimeter threat to pair with Embiid.
The addition of Russell would bring some more three-point shooting and scoring ability to the Sixers. This seems like a great fit on both ends of the floor. Russell would draw more attention to the perimeter and space the floor a bit more for Embiid. If he is doubled, Russell is an option to kick the ball out for an open shot.
There is a direct benefit of having D’Angelo Russell’s pull-up shooting ability paired with Joel Embiid in pick-and-roll situations, too. It’s difficult to apply pressure on a defense when the on-ball defender doesn’t have to fear taking that option away. That would open things up nicely.

The Sixers finished as the top team in the Eastern Conference this season but they are showing once again that they are not a finished product. Russell is a player that would improve the offensive end of the floor immediately.
