Why The Pacers Could And Should Try To Pull Off This Trade
Kevin Pritchard and the Pacers have remained steadfast in their belief in continuity of the roster over the last few offseasons. Unfortunately, that simply has not worked. Injuries have derailed them and the overall talent on the roster simply hasn’t been enough.
Ben Simmons is a player that Indiana would have had no chance of acquiring prior to his postseason struggles. He would have commanded too much value on the trade market. That could change with the way he played in the postseason and how much the 76ers need to make a change themselves.
No, the Pacers would not be acquiring Simmons to be their primary scorer. They would be trading for him to bring defense, playmaking, and a much-needed slashing ability. Caris LeVert and Domantas Sabonis are the top two offensive players on the roster and both players could benefit from having a guy like Simmons on the court.
Giving up both Malcolm Brogdon and TJ Warren is a steep asking price for the Pacers. Both players are starters and a key part of what Indiana wants to do moving forward. However, both players are also relatively capped with what they can bring and improve on moving forward.
If the Pacers want to bring in a 24-year-old star who has been struggling mentally, this would be the time to do it. The trade could backfire, or it could end up being a major steal. There is no question that Simmons has the talent and ability to be something special if he can figure out certain areas of his game.
Indiana should absolutely consider pursuing this trade. If Simmons unlocks his full potential and can find full confidence in himself and works hard on his game, he could be the piece that puts the Pacers back on the map. It would be a risk, but it’s a risk that a mediocre franchise like the Pacers has to make if they want to contend.
