Does this trade make sense for the Miami Heat?
If it were an option to land Malcolm Brogdon and TJ Warren in an NBA trade scenario while only having to give up Tyler Herro as the centerpiece of the deal, that’s an easy decision for the Miami Heat. Both Brogdon and Warren would immediately slot in for valuable roles alongside Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.

If the Miami Heat were to have theoretically soured on the long-term outlook of Tyler Herro’s development, it certainly makes sense to move on from before having to give him a substantial contract extension. It would capitalize on his trade value in the short-term, too.
The time to win is now with Jimmy Butler having the option of opting out of his $37.7 million player option in 2022-23, if he were to not agree to a contract extension prior. If he did get a deal done, adding talent will not be easy going forward with Bam Adebayo also starting the first season of his five-year, $163 million contract extension in 2021-22.
Executing a trade for Malcolm Brogdon would give the Heat a stable point guard option who is signed through the 2022-23 season. TJ Warren will be a free agent next offseason, but the Heat play an accommodating style that he would surely enjoy, so risking that he may depart in NBA free agency is a worthwhile risk to take.
Being able to land TJ Warren would be especially pivotal for the Miami Heat if the team is uncomfortable matching an offer sheet that Duncan Robinson gets in NBA free agency. This NBA trade scenario gives them more flexibility and a contingency plan.
