During the third game of the season for the Brooklyn Nets, guard Spencer Dinwiddie suffered a torn right ACL. Despite being presumed out for the season, multiple teams were interested in acquiring him at the trade deadline. For a time in April, Dinwiddie clearly had an eye on returning in the playoffs. The best case looks like the Eastern Conference Finals, if the Nets get there. That would be less than six months removed from his injury.
Dinwiddie has a $12.3 million player option for next season, and he has said he intends to opt out. While that doesn’t mean he won’t be back with the Nets next season, he will have other suitors. The Nets could do a sign-and-trade to bolster their depth.

During the 2019-20 season, Dinwiddie was the Nets’ second-leading scorer (20.6 points per game) and leading assist man (6.8), behind and ahead of Kyrie Irving respectively. He wasn’t all that efficient though, shooting 30.8 percent from 3-point range with a team-worst 2.7 turnovers per game. But how Dinwiddie would fit with the Nets’ superstar trio, possibly as the sixth man, is interesting. He is a scorer, with an average of 16.4 points per game over three seasons from 2017-18 to 2019-20. And he’s definitely not afraid to jack up shots (15.6 attempts per-36 minutes over the same three-season sample). His ability to be a facilitator, with assist per game averages of more than 6.5 in two of three seasons prior to this one, shouldn’t be discounted.
Citing his lack of clear fit on the Nets’ roster, Mandela Namaste of Bleacher Report put Dinwiddie on his list of free agents who could blow up on new teams in 2021. If he’s healthy for the start of the season, and at this point it’d be a surprise if he’s not (with plenty of time to spare), Dinwiddie will be an asset wherever he is.
