Does this trade make sense for the San Antonio Spurs?
Jakob Poeltl did everything the Spurs needed him to do this year and is a solid, young, defensive-minded center that could grow into a reliable player in San Antonio for many years to come, but overall, he is not their long-term solution for their frontcourt. As a result, adding Al Horford could make more sense now if it means getting a draft pick in return for Poeltl.

In this deal with the Thunder, the Spurs would have to take on Al Horford’s monster contract and with him being 35-years-old, he is nearing the end of his career, but these next couple of seasons, Horford could actually be a key player in San Antonio.
With the Thunder this year, Horford played in 28 games and played quite well, averaging 14.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and shooting 36.8% from three-point range. He can play in the low-post, distribute the basketball and knock down shots from virtually anywhere on the court, which is why he is basically the same fit in San Antonio as LaMarcus Aldridge was.
Trading Jakob Poeltl for Al Horford and a first-round pick next year makes sense the more times you look at this trade proposal, which is why San Antonio should be interested this offseason. Al Horford is not going to take this team back to the NBA Finals anytime soon, but adding him to their roster definitely puts them in a better position to make the playoffs than Jakob Poeltl does.
