The Kelly Oubre Jr. era with the Golden State Warriors has been short-lived and it might be over already. Oubre Jr. suffered a wrist injury in April that ended his season. Now, with restricted free agency coming up in the offseason, Oubre Jr. could be playing for another team next season and that team could end up being the Dallas Mavericks.
The fit between the two sides was strange from the beginning in Golden State. Oubre Jr. had a strong offensive season, but it never felt like he was a reliable piece within the offense.
Stephen Curry led a below-average Warriors’ team to the play-in round of the postseason thanks to what could be an MVP season. Golden State was without Klay Thompson once again this season after he suffered a torn Achilles last offseason. Aside from the fit for Oubre Jr., Golden State will not be in a position financially to bring him back.
The Warriors are a team that lives behind the three-point line. That is not a strength in Oubre Jr.’s game. He could be a better fit for a team like the Mavericks. They have one of the best players in the league in Luka Doncic.
On the outside, there are some strong three-point shooters which would take some pressure off Oubre Jr. He would be able to use his athleticism and score in the lane, which is the strongest part of his game. Dallas was the fifth seed in the Western Conference this season and they could continue to be aggressive now that they are climbing up the standings.
This would be an interesting trade to see between two Western Conference foes. Here is what a potential deal between the two sides might look like in the offseason.
