Miami Heat
The big winners of the NBA trade deadline this year are the Miami Heat. Recently, they acquired Trevor Ariza from the Oklahoma City Thunder. On deadline day, they landed Nemanja Bjelica from the Sacramento Kings and they were able to land arguably the second-best player on deadline day in Victor Oladipo from the Houston Rockets.
For starters, the players acquired are both fits for how the Miami Heat play. Ariza will help fill the hole left behind when Jae Crowder left in free agency for the Phoenix Suns as a hard-nosed defender that can knock down 3-pointers. Bjelica is a scoring forward that can replace a lot of what Olynyk was bringing to the team. Victor Oladipo provides the team with another option offensively and a strong defender to deploy on the perimeter, something that has been a weak spot for them at times.
Another reason for the Miami Heat landing at No. 1 on this list is what it cost to acquire Trevor Ariza and Victor Oladipo. Meyers Leonard, who has his issues to deal with, and a future second-round pick were sent to OKC for Ariza. Chris Silva and an injured, out of the rotation Maurice Harkless were sent to Sacramento for Bjelica. The Heat sent an injured Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk and agreed to a draft swap for Oladipo.
The fact that is all it took to land Victor Oladipo was shocking. While he is an impending free agent, it is wild that the Rockets are coming away with zero of the four best players, James Harden, Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen and Oladipo, from the blockbuster earlier this season.
Olynyk is the only rotation player that the Miami Heat surrendered to land Ariza, Bjelica and Victor Oladipo, three players that should be part of their rotation the remainder of the season. Pat Riley has still got it, ladies and gentlemen.
