New York Knicks Receive: G Devonte’ Graham
Charlotte Hornets Receive: G Elfrid Payton, DAL 2021 1st Round Pick, NYK 2022 2nd Round Pick
Last season, Devonte’ Graham emerged as one of the most improved players in the entire NBA, as he averaged 18.2 points, 7.5 assists, 3.4 rebounds and shot 37.3% from three-point range. He was the Hornets leading scorer a season ago and definitely their best offensively player.
While they still utilize him in their starting rotation this year, Devonte’ Graham has taken a step back this year with new talents like Gordon Hayward and LaMelo Ball joining the team. His overall offensive production is down and as a result, he could be an intriguing player that hits the trade market near the trade deadline.
His value is at an all-time high and with him being in the final year of his rookie contract, now could be the time for the Hornets to trade him in attempts to salvage some value that could end up being lost should he sign elsewhere in the offseason.
In 27 games this year, Graham is averaging just 13.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 5.6 assists and is shooting 35.3% from three-point range. Given the Hornets depth in the backcourt and both Terry Rozier and LaMelo Ball being focal points for their offense, Graham is a guy who could very much end up being traded near the NBA trade deadline and a guy who could have a big impact in New York.

Swapping Elfird Payton for Devonte’ Graham definitely improves the Knicks offensive and more particularly, their perimeter shooting numbers, but it also gives New York another young player to build with for the future.
The only question is whether or not Charlotte is willing to move the 25-year old combo-guard. Graham definitely fits in with the Hornets style of play and has been a scoring threat for them over the years, but Elfrid Payton could be the facilitator and reliable point guard they need behind LaMelo Ball.
It is a tough call to make, but there is definitely some value the Hornets can get out of the Knicks for trading Devonte’ Graham. Now, let’s take a look at why this trade makes sense for both the Hornets and the Knicks.
