The Orlando Magic have been negatively impacted by injuries this season and it could prompt them into being sellers at the NBA trade deadline. Aaron Gordon is one name that stands out, in particular, as being a potential trade piece. In fact, he was nearly traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this season.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, The Magic and Timberwolves were ‘nearing an agreement’ on a trade package that was focused on Aaron Gordon in exchange for Ricky Rubio and future draft assets.
“Until Gordon’s left ankle sprain that sidelined him for six weeks, the Timberwolves and Magic were nearing an agreement on a package for Gordon that centered on Ricky Rubio and future draft capital, sources said.”

It remains to be seen if the Magic and Timberwolves could re-engage on a potential trade scenario to send Aaron Gordon to Minnesota after he’s healthy. Given the Timberwolves’ horrible season, it would almost make sense to execute a deal regardless.
The idea behind the potential fit for Aaron Gordon with the Timberwolves is clear. He can help provide wing defense at the four spot alongside Karl-Anthony Towns to help improve Minnesota’s defense. Meanwhile, he adds speed to a unit that already has Anthony Edwards.

Aaron Gordon would benefit from the spacing that Karl-Anthony Towns provides within the half-court due to his shooting ability. Gordon isn’t an offensive threat that is going to break down his man off-the-dribble within tight windows, so having that extra room to turn the corner can go a long way.
The Minnesota Timberwolves already have a solid core in Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards, D’Angelo Russell, and Malik Beasley. Being able to add a talent like Aaron Gordon in a potential trade with the Orlando Magic would add an intriguing dynamic.
